Chris Lewis, Vice-President of the Interactive Entertainment Business for Microsoft recently obliged to an interview with revered gaming publication Edge. In the damming interview Lewis harshly criticised Nintendo’s current online infrastructure, and also reiterated that he believes Microsoft occupies a different space to the Kyoto based company.
Nintendo occupies a different space to us in that regard as well, in that [the Wii] isn’t an online connected platform, it isn’t high definition, it doesn’t offer the scalability we offer in the SKU lineup and the storage ability. … I certainly think we do have an appetite for getting into those broad family genres, and that part of the strategy will continue to be so, but I think we clearly want to appeal to all tastes. Our aspiration is to win overall, and to do that we need to continue to bring content to all the different genres in the market, with Xbox Live at the heart of that.

Choice Magazine has conducted a series of tests which have highlighted just how much power is consumed by next generation consoles.
Leading the pack was the PlayStation 3, which according to Choice “consumed over 10 times as much power as the Nintendo Wii“. Coming in guilty second was Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console which was tied alongside a standard plasma television set.
Our tests also found that leaving a PlayStation 3 on while not in use would cost almost $250 (£121) a year in electricity bills (charged at 15c (7p) per kWh). This alone is around five times more than it would take to run a refrigerator for the same yearly period.
