Akitoshi Kawazu, a respected developer for Square Enix, has spoken out about the often-speculated HD enabled Wii, stating that the console would ultimately be boring for consumers. His point clearly shows that High Definition gaming for the Wii just wouldn’t be enough to win those without a Nintendo Wii over.
“If the only difference really in the Wii 2 is only SD to HD, that would be really quite boring.”

Whilst a plethora of highly anticipated franchises are making their way onto both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Nintendo are trying relentlessly to persuade certain publishers to provide Wii owners with similar offerings.
“I think for those games (i.e Modern Warfare 2, Assassins Creed etc), typically decisions are being made two years prior,” Fils-Aime says. “And so the decisions two years ago were that those types of games would not be effective on the platform. But we’ve shown that that’s just not the case. High-quality, effectively marketed against our installed base will sell, period — end of story.”
“Upgrading to HD is not the way we at Nintendo do things. The way we at Nintendo do things is, you know, when we will move to a new generation, it’s because there are some fundamental things the [current] console cannot do,what that says is that simply the addition of HD capability will not be the next step for us. There will be more to it. There will be additional capability. There will be additional elements, and, given that, it is far into the future.”

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime clearly denounced the likely hood of the Wii HD in a recent interview with Game Trailers TV, but it appears Nintendo of Japan are openly undecided on providing HD support in the future.
“Since our division has been reviewing and developing a number of hardware, we are looking into many different things, including HD and SD… However, we have not come to the stage where we can announce which is the most appropriate means. Since an increasing number of the TV sets at home around the world are becoming HD today, it will be natural for a machine to be able to generate graphics that people will be accustomed to see on HD televisions. Since the ordinary TV programmes are now shifting to HD, moving to HD appears to me a natural flow.
“I believe that we should take the most appropriate balance,” he added. “We are not too much concerned about if the technology itself is the state-of-the-art or rather old-fashioned. If we can find out the most appropriate medium, between SD and HD, and flexibly move around them depending on the game’s contents, it will be good, I think.”
Famed Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto said: “As long as my way of making games are concerned, all I am concerned about technologies is, we probably cannot swim against the tide. The customers’ tastes will become more and more refined. Even today, many customers who have seen HD once say they cannot go back to SD.
He later added: “Regarding the question of SD or HD, it must depend on each software. For example, we have to ask ourselves if HD is really necessary to develop Wii Fit. Won’t HD be better for the games like Pikmin? The developers should choose the most appropriate graphical format depending on the software they make. To Nintendo, our theme is how we can prepare the SDK library to cater to the needs of the developers, with which the developers can more easily develop their games.”

Reggie Fils-Aime has clearly stated on Game Trailers TV: Nintendo Special that despite what Michael Patcher has lead us to believe, Nintendo are not going to be releasing a high definition version of the Wii.
“Michael [Pachter] continues to be the only one that believes this is going to happen,” the NoA president told presenter Geoff Keighley.
“I don’t know how forcefully we can say that there is no Wii HD.”

Netflix are currently testing out the streaming media service on Nintendo Wii according to an industry source.
StreamingMedias Dan Rayburn has stated in a recent blog post that he’s received numerous photos from an individual working on the Netflix project for the Nintendo Wii. He also claims that Nintendo are set to delay the service until early next year in an effort to showcase the service on the often talked about Wii HD.
“What I’m hearing is that Nintendo originally planned to bring the Netflix service to the Wii before the end of this year, which still might take place, but that Nintendo is also considering holding off on the Netflix service until they release their next generation Wii HD unit in early 2010.”

Square Enix CEO, Yoichi Wada, expects Nintendo to release its natural successor to the Wii in 2011.
Yoichi Wada recently sat down with the Financial Times to discuss the current state of gaming consoles. His overall opinion was that Nintendo will release a new console in 2011 to bring it more in-line with both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, has sadly revealed that there won’t be a HD version of the Wii in the future.
Speaking to online publication, Venture Beat, Iwata states that there isn’t a high definition version of the Wii in R&D at Nintendo. Whilst the Wii won’t ever support 720p/1080i/1080p visuals, the next successor to the enormously successful Wii console most certainly will.
If we have an opportunity to make a new console, it will probably support HD because it is now common throughout the world. However, as far as the Wii is concerned, we have not found a significant reason to make it HD-compatible at this time. What is the significant meaning to users? I don’t think we should do it unless we find that reason. If we decide for other reasons to make new hardware, then HD is one of the things we would naturally add.

Nintendo are poised to announce a whole slew of new information at tomorrows GDC Keynote in San Francisco.
Whilst speculation and rumours are customarily buzzing around the Web regarding possible announcements from the Kyoto based company, no one actually knows for sure what we can expect to hear.
A new addition to the Mario or Zelda franchises wouldn’t go amiss, and neither would information about the Wii’s successor, Wii HD. However, it’s more likely information of this kind will be left to the annual E3 trade event in June.

Shigeru Miyamoto recently sat down with German TV show 3Sat Neues and provided viewers with some snippets of information regarding the future iteration of the Wii – Wii HD.
“I’m afraid we cannot confirm what we are doing today. But the fact of the matter is that technology is evolving all the time and in Japan, for example… All the analogue broadcast will be stopped and shifted into the digital broadcasting. So many things are taking place and we are working in terms of the changes of the technologies all the time.”

The Digitimes reports that Nintendo are considering using the same infared technology that the current Wii uses on it’s successor, meaning cheaper parts for Nintendo and a lower cost console for consumers.
