The next iteration of the Zelda franchise for the Nintendo Wii will fully utilise the Wii MotionPlus peripheral according to legendary games designer, Shigeru Miyamoto.
“About MotionPlus. We’re implementing it so that players can feel like they themselves are holding the sword. In the previous Zelda (Twilight Princess) the targeting was based on the IR pointer. This time however, we’ll be using MotionPlus for a variety of more convenient targeting systems that will allow for more pleasant gameplay.”

Legendary games developer Shigeru Miyamoto recently sat down with MTV Multiplayer to discuss the beloved Star Fox franchise.
Whilst he readily admits he adores the series, Miyamoto can’t help but feel disappointed regarding the franchises sales of recent times.
“I tend to forget those games [laughs]. I’m a big fan of the Star Fox games. Every time we make a Star Fox game I’m hoping people will enjoy it as much as I do. Of course the goal every time is to try and make it more and more fun but, at least in Japan, the people that purchase the Star Fox games has decreased over the years. But we still try to make them more fun and hopefully people will see the appeal in those games.”

Whilst many people were disappointed with Nintendo’s decision to opt out of high definition for the Wii, Miyamoto it seems hasn’t ruled it out for future iterations of Nintendo’s home consoles.
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pretty graphics, and if I’m a consumer that has an HDTV, I’d want to be able to play my games with nice graphics too. And I think as we’ve seen the penetration rates for HDTV increase, we’re going to see video games and Nintendo’s games move along in step with the progression of technology,” said Miyamoto.
“But what I don’t think is necessarily true is that the graphics itself is something that’s going to make the gameplay experience better. So we’re still going to focus on the gameplay, but we’ll take advantage of the technology as it comes out.”

Gamers have proven to be excessively sceptical when it comes to Nintendo’s forthcoming Wii Vitality Sensor. Shigeru Miyamoto on the other hand claims gamers should have some faith in future plans for the peripheral.
Ideally we would have been able to talk about this in terms of the software implementation rather than just the sensor itself. I don’t have any indication for you (of what we have in the works) other than to say that we have lots of very creative ideas. We understand the challenge before us, and we have met these challenges in the past. We just ask that people have confidence in us.

Shigeru Miyamoto has denounced the value of digital distribution, claiming he feels more comfortable with the prospect of physical media rather than downloadable.
Personally, I’m one of those guys who, even if I have all the songs from iTunes, I want the CD as well. I feel more reassured with that physical media. Entertainment is something that will not just become digital. If I look at Wii MotionPlus, this is something that you’re not doing via digital distribution. The thing for us is we really don’t see the future of video games being merely confined to digital distribution or moving solely or even to a majority of our products being distributed that way.

Shigeru Miyamoto has categorically stated that the forthcoming Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be geared towards hardcore gamers.
‘I do believe that there is a lot here to appeal to the more veteran and more experienced gamers, and I think it’s a title that they will obviously enjoy, but I really took it into consideration and tried to do our best to create a game that’s accessible to new gamers as well. And, you know, we also built it with consideration that we believe that people who played through the first Mario Galaxy have become better players.’

Gamers awaiting the revitalized Kid Icarus franchise may have to wait a bit longer according to games guru, Shigeru Miyamoto. Whilst this is no firm confirmation that the franchise is definitely coming, it’s a start.
“Wait, please. I’m really surprised how popular that is,” said Miyamoto when asked about a series revival last month. “But you are the first person to ask at this E3!”

Shigeru Miyamoto still remains unconvinced by Microsoft’s attempt to woo gamers with a motion sensing camera.
Whilst Microsoft’s Project Natal does away with controllers completely, Shigeru Miyamoto believes video games need the feedback and precision of a control pad to feel like your truly interacting with your console.
As someone who thinks of things from the perspective of creating interactive experiences, I really think that you do need something (to hold in your hand). I don’t think as a creator that I could create an experience that truly feels interactive if you don’t have something to hold in your hand, if you don’t have something like force feedback that you can feel from the controller. That’s why I think the Wii remote, particularly with Wii MotionPlus, makes for such a strong experience.
