Sega firmly believe that Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is going to be ruling the top spot in the UK gaming charts this Christmas.
“There are three games that can be Christmas number one: Call of Duty, FIFA or Mario & Sonic. It’s as simple as that.”
“The price cuts on PS3 and 360 could make that a slightly larger challenge, and Modern Warfare 2 will be huge. Will it be bigger than the last Modern Warfare? I think it probably will be.”
“But we think we can do it because the last Mario & Sonic achieved a 30 per cent attach rate on Wii and on DS it got a seven per cent attach rate. And if we achieve even half of that, we’ll be in with a chance.”
- Sega UK’s marketing director John Clarke

Sega have announced a brand new 2D Sonic title codenamed “Project Needlemouse” scheduled for 2010.
Sonic it appears is making a more than welcomed return in 2D and HD thanks to Sega’s latest project. The game is currently going under the guise of “Project Needlemouse” though it should be mentioned that no specific consoles have been mentioned at present.
GS: Why did Sega decide to bring Sonic back to 2D? Did the success of Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure play a part?
KB: Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay. Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots.
GS: What can you tell us about the game?
KB: I can tell you it’s a brand new 2D adventure coming out in 2010, it’s in HD, and to definitely stay tuned.
GS: With HD makeovers of classic games being popular right now, can we expect the game to use chunky old school sprites or hi-res HD sprites?
KB: You can definitely expect HD graphics.
GS: Thanks for your time.

Action has recently been taken regarding the influx of hackers and cheaters on Sega’s recently released The Conduit.
Initially online players were finding themselves competing against other players who were able to produce infinite ammo and infinite health, now the situation has gotten even worse. Thankfully both Sega and High Voltage have decided to issue the ‘banhammer‘ to any such players found abusing or cheating throughout online matches.

Sega are extremely optimistic about the first week sales The Conduit has managed to achieve on Nintendo Wii.
Whilst the company has tried to tap into the ‘hardcore market’ on the Wii before, they’ve yet to have any major success. The Conduit has achieved strong sales on its first week of retail and Sega are confident that they’ll remain steady.
“The mature audience on the Wii is a relatively new audience. The system has traditionally targeted families and kids and not the more mature hardcore gamer. We recognize that when you are trying something new, it may take awhile for the consumer to jump on board with it,”
“The game is already successful with us as the reviews have been pretty impressive. Overall the reviews have been strong, and though there will always be some naysayers we definitely feel we have been able to offer gamers the Wii experience we were looking for.”
“Though it is still early days in the retail life of the game, we are seeing very strong week one sales and being the best shooter on the Wii means that we think we will see this game out there and selling well for a long time.”

The Conduit, possibly the most eagerly awaited FPS this year for Wii, is due to be released June 9th in the US.
Whilst the majoirty of gamers were belated at the news, a large proportion will be bitterly dissapointed to learn the first person shooter will not include split-screen multiplayer support, as originally thought.

Could Nintendo be handing down some of their key franchises to different developers?
Two different sites from two different software developers are sporting what appear to be iconic icons from key Nintendo franchises along with a countdown clock.
The first developer is Sega, whose website sports a retro 8bit Mario 1up mushroom, which once clicked provides users with the infamous 1up jingle that’s apparent throughout the Mario franchises.
The second developer is Marvelous Entertainment Inc, whose website depicts what appears to be a Legend of Zelda Triforce, which again is accompanied by a countdown timer.
Could these established development studios be tackling some of the biggest named franchises in Nintendo’s bountiful back catalogue? Hopefully all will be revealed soon…
Update: Sega game revealed. PSP game revealed.

Simon Jeffery, President of Sega of America boldly claimed to Venture Beat Magazine that journalists can no longer class the Wii as a ‘fad’.
VB: I guess people now believe the Wii isn’t just a fad?
SJ: It’s very much disproven. People do play with the Wii like crazy for a while. It gathers cobwebs. Then they bring it out again. But kids are such a big part of the gaming community now and they’re demanding Wiis from their parents. Those kids will shape the future of gaming and they’re not a fad. Microsoft and Sony have to think about how to make their experiences more gaming in that way.
