Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime has spoken openly to news network CNBC about his feelings on Modern Warfare 2’s phenomenal success.
You know, I was not (surprised about Modern Warfare 2’s success). We know that it’s a high-quality title. We know that it will do exceptionally well. Their challenge is going to be sustaining that. It was so big so fast, what happens next week and the week after? Versus, Mario is going to sell for high numbers every day now through, really, for the next couple of years”

Whilst the Nintendo Wii remains the best selling console of this generation it’s common knowledge that sales in recent times have been on the decline. Satoru Iwata has accepted this, and has issued a smaller target for the full year – only 20 million units compared to the previous 26 million forecast..
“Wii has stalled. We were unable to continually release strong software, and let the nice mood cool. We were unable to show a new game to become ‘the next thing.’ In the game market, once you’ve lost the momentum, it takes time to recover. With the price drop, sales returned to a certain level, but they just did not reach the level of last year around this time.”

Executive vice president of sales and marketing, Cammie Dunaway, firmly believes that strong software titles are all-important to Nintendo and will in turn equate to strong, healthy software sales.
“We believe that the pipeline for games for experienced gamers is getting to be very robust and will continue to be so. I think strong games will have strong sales, and one of the things too is that these games can have really long tails. That it’s not just a matter of looking at the first month of sales.”
“Nintendo is working with third parties to help them understand that it’s all about taking advantage of the unique interface and our hardware. I think as people are getting more comfortable with our technology, they are creating better and better games.”

Nintendo’s decidedly lacklustre release schedule for 2009 has ultimately damaged Wii hardware sales according to Nintendo themselves.
“What I can say is our launch calendar is very different from 2008 versus 2009, as you know. Last year we had three powerful titles, with Super Smash Bros. Brawl in March, Mario Kart in April and Wii Fit in May. I mean, those are blockbuster titles.”
“So we had a strong title launch in the first half of 2008, and we have a strong title launch in the second half of 2009. Wii Sports Resort really kicks off the back half of our launch calendar. Like you saw at E3, we have New Super Mario Bros. Wii launching this year and we have Wii Fit Plus launching this year. So with Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Fit Plus in the back half, that shows that we’ve just got a different launch of what we hope will be blockbuster titles.”

Whilst the Wii is continuing to dominate the hardware charts, the reality is sales for the console have dropped as much as 50% year-over-year.
Michael Pachter, an analyst for Wedbush Morgan, genuinely believes that Nintendo will ultimately consider a price cut for the innovative console this holiday season.
We believe Nintendo will be more promotional, and will consider price cuts in order to increase sales during the holidays.
