Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata has revealed that Nintendo had previously designed a successor to the Nintendo DS/DSi but have subsequently decided to scrap it.
Whilst no hints were given regarding the features the console contained or its aesthetics, Nintendo firmly believed the time wasn’t right for it to introduce a completely new hand-held gaming device to consumers.
But when we are launching new hardware, the most important is thing is to sustain the momentum. If introducing new hardware won’t do anything to do that, well…”

President of Japan’s Association of Copyright for Computer Software, Yutaka Kubota, has branded gamers who play Nintendo DS games illegally as terrorists.
In an interview with Japanese gaming bible, Famitsu, Kubota stated that gamers who download Nintendo DS games via the Internet and then upload them on their own flash-ROM carts are nothing short of terrorists seeking to destroy the gaming industry.
This is an issue that affects our national interests and, personally, I see it as a form of information terrorism that is crushing Japan’s industry. I know that Famitsu’s readers like playing games. I want them to be aware that unless we do something, nobody will be able to make the games they love to play. Not only will gamers wanting to play new games not be able to play anything, but people who want to join the game industry in the future will have their dreams trampled upon.

Rockstars well received Grand Theft Auto: ChinaTown Wars has sold over 70,000 copies in the title’s second month of release.
According to the recently released NPD figures for April 2009, Grand Theft Auto: ChinaTown Wars has enjoyed a second successive month of steady sales, racking up a rather tidy 74,000 copies.
Whilst its initial sales were slightly disappointing for such a highly regarded franchise as the Grand Theft Auto series, its current sales seem to indicate the title has a fairly positive shelf life.

The next Zelda title for the Nintendo DS is set to appeal to a wider age group than the series has previously appealed to.
Nintendo are all about reaching as wide a demographic as humanly possible with their forthcoming key franchises, therefore it comes as no surprise to learn that the Zelda: Spirit Tracks will appeal to a wider age group of people then previous iterations of the franchise according to a recently released report aimed towards company investors.

Despite receiving rave reviews from a variety of gaming publications Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars ultimately flopped at retail. Nintendo however have stepped forward to take a look at why this has been the case, acknowledging that large franchises on the Nintendo DS tend to sell well over an extended period of time, rather than just a short one month period.
Remember that many games for Nintendo DS have a non-traditional sales pattern. The trend is toward ‘evergreen’ games that sell well over an extended period of time instead of in a one-month spike. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for Nintendo DS is a good example. In its first month (November 2007), it sold only 36,000. To date, it has sold through nearly 500,000. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is a great game that has received tremendous reviews. We expect that with continued backing, it will follow the same long-tail/evergreen sales route that other top sellers have taken.

With the imminent release of the Nintendo DSi many gamers assumed that the vast majority of new games would work on both the DSi and the DS, well this might not be the case.
Developers have been informed that they can produce games on the DSi cards – which as the name suggests only works with the Nintendo DSi, or alternatively, they can produce games on DSi Enhanced cards which will work perfectly fine on both machines. Hopefully the majority of game developers will choose to work on the latter allowing everyone access to the forthcoming top tier titles available on the hand-held.

Whilst many presumed a new Zelda title would be flaunted at GDC ‘09 not many expected it for the Nintendo DS.
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks which was announced by Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata, initially appears very similar to the critically acclaimed Phantom Hourglass.
Although a short video presentation was shown at the event, details regarding the game appear rather scarce. The trailer presentation shows series protagonist Link riding a Western style rail road train equipped with a cannon, whilst the footage switches to the mandatory dungeon esquire adventuring we’re all used to.
The game is presented in a cell shaded graphical effect mirroring Links previous DS adventure, The Phantom Hourglass. As with the aforementioned title the game will utilize both the bottom and top screen for gameplay and dungeon maps respectively. The game is officially due for release sometime later this year and looks set to be another integral adventure story for the Nintendo DS/DSi.

Nintendo have decided to cease production of its white and silver Ds units, instead they’re deciding to stick with more popular colours.
Whilst the Black, Pink, Red, Green and Turquoise colours have been an immediate hit with consumers, it appears the more traditional white and silver models are dwindling in popularity. Due to this very nature, Nintendo have taken steps to cease production of these two units in the United Kingdom.
