Chris Lewis, Vice-President of the Interactive Entertainment Business for Microsoft recently obliged to an interview with revered gaming publication Edge. In the damming interview Lewis harshly criticised Nintendo’s current online infrastructure, and also reiterated that he believes Microsoft occupies a different space to the Kyoto based company.
Nintendo occupies a different space to us in that regard as well, in that [the Wii] isn’t an online connected platform, it isn’t high definition, it doesn’t offer the scalability we offer in the SKU lineup and the storage ability. … I certainly think we do have an appetite for getting into those broad family genres, and that part of the strategy will continue to be so, but I think we clearly want to appeal to all tastes. Our aspiration is to win overall, and to do that we need to continue to bring content to all the different genres in the market, with Xbox Live at the heart of that.

The VP for business development in Microsoft’s game division, Shane Kim, had some choice words to say about its competitors, namely the seemingly impenetrable Nintendo.
Kim openly stated at the University of California’s Play conference that “It never pays to bash Nintendo. Rather, he said he loved Nintendo because it’s broadening the audience and is showing Microsoft what it needs to accomplish.”

Microsoft reportedly respects the Nintendo Ds console according to Rare employees.
Online gaming publication Eurogamer recently sat down with Rare engineer, Joe Humfrey and discussed working with the Ds console for their forthcoming Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise. Inadvertently whilst interviewing Humfrey they discovered that Microsoft view the DS as a extremely “viable platform” and a natural way to broaden the Piñata franchise.

Choice Magazine has conducted a series of tests which have highlighted just how much power is consumed by next generation consoles.
Leading the pack was the PlayStation 3, which according to Choice “consumed over 10 times as much power as the Nintendo Wii“. Coming in guilty second was Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console which was tied alongside a standard plasma television set.
Our tests also found that leaving a PlayStation 3 on while not in use would cost almost $250 (£121) a year in electricity bills (charged at 15c (7p) per kWh). This alone is around five times more than it would take to run a refrigerator for the same yearly period.

Business Week have surprisingly knighted Microsoft as the fifth most innovative company in its extensive poll of over 3,000 world-wide businesses.
Unsurprisingly, the ever-iconic Apple took the much cavorted top-spot, which saw Nintendo and Sony reside in seventh and ninth place respectively.

Shane Kim addresses Microsoft’s critics and defiantly declares ‘Nintendo haven’t won yet’.
“This generation still has a long way to go. It is way too early to declare a winner there. A few weeks ago, a lot of people thought the Patriots would win the Super Bowl too,”

With an enormous amount of influential hype and positive reviews behind it, does Nintendo feel that it has to produce something to counter the Halo 3 juggernaut?
Q. There’s been a lot of buzz about Microsoft’s “Halo 3.” How do you expect it to affect the console battle this holiday season?
A. Will they sell a lot of software? Certainly. Will it sell hardware? I think it’s an open question. Why? Because I think that the “Halo 3″ consumer already has the hardware, because they’re playing “Bioshock” and “Crackdown” and a variety of games that are, in the end, quite similar: first-person shooter experience, multiplayer capable online. Tell me what’s new?
Q. So do you feel like you need to counter “Halo 3″ in some way?
A. No.
I am fortunate to have a series of (games) that are all going to drive substantial sales for me and are all targeted to different parts of the consumer mix.
